Can someone please expound on the history and meaning of Shanker Lady?

I am afraid that I can take this one. There was a woman who came to health class at Viewmont HS to teach us about STD's. She had a slight lisp as I recall and an unusual curl to her lip when she used the word "shanker." Hence, she was dubbed the "shanker lady." I believe Landes deserves credit for the name.

The envelope was from a letter that I sent to Landes from Peru while he was in Paraguay.
