Skiing again...

Last year I went skiing with Leland a couple of times (see picts and post below). This year, I have been busy and didn't get a chance to go with him. Sorry buddy. Landes called me last week and we spent a half day skiing at Deer Valley. What an experience! One of the highlights of my high school career was skiing with my best friends. I don't know if you guys remember the night skiing trips to Brighton, but they are still vividly a part of my memories. The ones I remember the most were the times I drove my Mom's car (affectionately known as Nova Histamine) and you guys all piled in the back. The exhaust leak nearly killed us. On our way home, you guys would be sleeping and I would have to open the window to keep awake. I think Leland swore at me once because I jolted him out of a deep sleep with that cold November blast of air. Little did he know that I probably saved his life by clearing the exhaust fumes out of the car. Which ski trips are most memorable for you guys? Joey's cabin? Alta on President's day? Stolen ski poles? Please comment.

I remember Buffy driving down the shoulder of Little Cottonwood Canyon and getting beer bottles thrown at the Buffalier.

I also remember night skiing at Brighton and getting some powder on the side and running into a dead tree limb which ripped the crotch of my ski bibs. I still have the bibs with the sewn up tear. I'm glad the limb didn't disembowel me. One of my patient's mom's remarried a guy from Fruitland, Idaho. I asked if she knew Brangie. She said they are their neighbors and that Dr. Barlow is the Stake President. I remember Brad landing the first 360 out of any of us. Brent followed close behind and I never even got close.

I remember Rodney's truck throwing a rod as we were getting close to the mouth of Big Cottonwood canyon which put an end to that trip. That truck later saved most of our lives as it protected us from that stoned kid in the Saab that hit us coming out of Xenon dance club.

Speaking of car breakdowns, was it Bryan's station wagon that brokedown near the mouth of Ogden Canyon on the way to Powder Mountain and we ended up bowling at rainbow gardens?

I remember vaguely, one time at "The Bird" when I believe we were wearing shorts in the spring. We may have even gone shirtless for a while. Calls of "Scinece" could be heard throughout the day indicating the sighting of a cute girl.

I just remembered one more good one. We skipped school and battled a blizzard and horrible canyon roads to get to Snowbird. Not too long after we got past the mouth of the canyon, the road was shut down. The first half of the day was rough, but then the sun came out and we had the best powder day I can ever remember. What made it better was that we pretty much had the resort to ourselves because of the road closing earlier. It was a snorkel day. I'm pretty sure Leeland was there and Greenor, but I'm not sure who else.

Wow! These are great memories. I would like to comment on a few that have been mentioned. First, the buffalier experience was unforgetable. Brian decided that he would race down the pull out lane and try to get ahead of all other other cars. I was personally not very comfortable with this and then the beer bottle came out of nowhere. We all learned our lesson on that one. Next, Rodney's truck and the infamous rod throwing experience! I remember we were on Wasatch Boulevard (this was way before 215 was built). When the engine blew up I had to hike down to a house ask to use the phone and call my dad. For a long time I thought that it was my driving that caused the engine damage. Recently, my older brother told me that he had noticed water in the oil for about three weeks before this happened. In an interesting corollary my son's toyota corolla threw a rod on 215 near to the same place the black truck did 20 years ago. Landes helped me haul it back to my home where it took me 1 month to replaced the engine. I was proud of the fact that I could do it on my own. I also remember Bryan's station wagon breaking down at the mouth of Ogden canyon. We got it turned around and rode on the back down into the parking lot of some Mexican restaurant. Another awesome ski day foiled by bad vehicles. Summer skiing at the bird was awesome. I have a photo of us skiing there in 1984. I will try to post it if I can find it. Bryan, Landes, and Leland were on their missions at the time. I think Rolan, Brad, RJ, and me were the ones who went. In the picture, I was wearing the kamakazi head band Leland sent me. When Landes and I were skiing at Deer Valley a month or so ago, calls of "science" were heard echoing along the slopes. The term has become so endeared that Landes has even taught his sons what it means. You guys are awesome! What memories!

The photo you describe is already posted in January 2007 under the "Skiing" entry. Do you have more photos? Congrats on finishing the marathon. Give us more details: finishing time, hitting the wall, blisters, chaffing, etc.
